Ten reasons to be cheerful

Updated: May 28

There’s been plenty to reflect on from what was a dreadful football season for Peterborough United.

But as an eternal optimist, I want to stick two fingers to the negative nellies and think positive.

So I am going to share the ten things I am already looking forward to as we turn our thoughts towards hopefully happier times.

1. More Alex Bass

Our number one is the perfect place to start and one of the first names on the Posh team-sheet. Bass was also one of the top performers this season.

For the first time in many years, Posh have a strong reliable goalkeeper. A 72% save rate, having faced more than 200 shots tells its own story.

I am looking forward to seeing how he can build on that first season at London Road.

2. Things can’t get much worse

Two seasons of struggle doesn’t do much for expectations of a charge up the table.

We will of course be feeling hopeful of a change in fortunes come August, but we will know not to be overcome with optimism.

3. Kyrell Lisbie kicking on

It was a standout first season for the young winger, signed last summer from Braintree Town.

He seamlessly made the transition from non-league, finishing with 14 goals and 7 assists, as well as a bad back from carrying the lion’s share of our attacking burden.

Lisbie’s performances and returns tailed off as he paid the price for a lack of a break, but I am hoping he comes back refreshed and ready to kick on.

4. Some great local pre-season games

As much as we enjoy the normal season, there’s nothing better than getting up close to the players while watching Posh – and hopefully a few new faces - at the home grounds of Peterborough Sports, Stamford, and others.

I am already looking forward to those early summer evenings.

5. A full pre-season for Luke Williams

We have seen what a difference Williams can make on the training ground from the purple patch of form at the end of 2025 and start of 2026.

We know it all fell apart, but I am hoping that a full pre-season, with plenty of time to work on both tactics and conditioning will show us what a real Luke Williams squad looks like.

6. Williams’ player picks

A quiet transfer window in January meant no chance for a look at a Williams picked player.

With big work clearly needed during the summer, we will finally see some new arrivals chosen by the manager responsible for the squad.

And let’s be honest, who doesn’t get excited by a new signing?

Will Luke Williams change Posh's formation, and should he?

7. Away days to look forward to

A new season always brings different places and stadiums to visit. Plenty of us will be looking forward to trips to Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday while Bromley’s promotion will give the chance for a few fans to tick a new venue off their grounds list.

8. The new badge – and kits

A year after it was announced, we will finally get to see the club’s new crest in all its glory as it takes its place on the club’s kits for the first time.

Like new signings, the arrival of the new season’s kits tends to bring out the excited youths in us all.

9. Season two of Harry Leonard

Another of the handful of success stories from last season was the young striker who arrived from Blackburn at the end of the window.

His return of 17 goals was just a small part of the story. Leonard worked his socks off for the team and provided others with countless opportunities.

It’s nice to head into the new campaign with an established main striker, who is (hopefully) only going to get better.

10. Second season syndrome

We have already mentioned our biggest successes of last season, but there are a few others who have shown glimpses of promise.

Brandon Khela, Ben Woods, and David Okagbue could all really make a name of themselves if they can keep up their development, while as ever at Peterborough United, there are young players to be excited about.
